The Film and Theater Connection
The Film and Theater Connection

Live Theater predates cinematic productions by hundreds of years. It is known the beginning of role playing entertainment was evident in ancient courtyards. The Greek and Roman eras had plays with masks to disguise the actor. The theme was typically dramatic until satire became a popular scene. This has led us amphitheaters and opera houses who hosted full on productions of our favorite plays and musicals. There are many ways plays and movies are alike with neither having a superior place in the industry. With plotlines and plot twists, there is a tale to be told. It is said that films can attribute their success to Live Theater for many reasons. From acting cues to props and design, there is much to be learned from the stage.

The Bond of Plays and Films

The entertainment industry is a tough business. The bond between Plays and Films is intricate and behind the scenes most of the time. They are each distinct in their own brand of brilliance. Theatrical plays have an essence that cannot be transitioned to the screen. The stage comes to life with performance and ambiance. On the same note, Movies have an intense dynamic on their side of the aisle. Motion, effects and editing combine with pristine results. Through these differences, they still hold similar ideals which may have started within the Theater.

Acting Parameters– The red carpet is full of talented actors and actresses of all ages. Some enjoy both the Theater and Films while others have a penchant for one or the other. Acting on stage is quite different than shooting a scene for a movie. Facial expressions, movements and improvisation are heightened during a live performance. Without an opportunity to yell cut and restart their lines, stage actors have to be quick witted. This method of acting has strengthened the concept of showing emotion, vocal training and gestures to make a point. This transfers well to Hollywood with small adjustments for close ups.

The Setting and Surrounding– Before we had complete sets or overhead cranes for cameras, backdrops and props were designed for the greatest effect. In Movies, directors can pick locations and digitalize their surrounding as necessary. In the Theater, the world is across a measured space. Plays have set the stage in the entertainment industry with an emphasis on visual impact. Changing the setting with additional pieces to create an illusion shows the importance of attention to detail.

Movies and Plays arrive at their destination with the same intention; however, they take two differing paths to get there. The fundamentals that began long ago continue to change and grow with their audience. Plays remained stoic alongside a few modern amenities while Films focus on adding technological vibrance for media excellence. As the curtains close at the end of the day, the pair share a unique affinity with one another.
